Super Dimension Fortress Macross

In the year 1999, a massive alien spacecraft crashes on a small island on Earth. Over the next 10 years, a city springs up around it as the U.N. military organization works to reverse-engineer the alien technology and restore the damaged spacecraft, naming it the SDF-1 Macross. In 2009 at the launch ceremony, a young hotshot civilian pilot named Hikaru Ichijyo visits the Macross at U.N. pilot Roy Focker's request. In a surprise twist, an alien armada enters the Earth's solar system and detects the Macross as a battleship used by their enemy, the Supervision Army. The aliens, known as the Zentradi, prepare to advance but the controls aboard the Macross come to life and override the human crew. A devastating barrage wipes out the Zentradi's forward ships, prompting a counterattack.
While taking the new VF-1 Valkyrie space fighter out for a test flight, Hikaru finds himself in the middle of an alien invasion. The novice pilot is able to fend off his attackers long enough to save a young civilian girl, Lynn Minmay, before getting to safety. The Macross crew is ordered by their captain to execute their prototype Fold System to escape the attack. The experimental technology works, but unpredictably — the entire Macross island is transported to the very edge of the solar system. The civilians are now part of the Macross crew, which must slowly return to home using its conventional engines in order to repulse the apparent Zentradi conquest of Earth.

Footage from Super Dimension Fortress Macross was used in combination with Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA to create the American animated series Robotech by Harmony Gold in 1985.
